Leon Raymond LaRock

June 3, 1932 — March 8, 2019

 

OGDENSBURG- A celebration of life for Leon Raymond LaRock, 86, of Ogdensburg, will be held Saturday, March 16, 2019, at the Lisbon American Legion from 1 - 4 pm. All are welcome to attend.  There will be no public calling hours, burial will be held privately by his family.  Mr. LaRock died on Friday, March 8, 2019, at the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Leon was born on June 3, 1932, in the town of Oswegatchie to the late Maurice (Morris) & Arene Peters LaRock.  He attended Lisbon School and went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War as a Medical Ambulance Driver.

A longtime marriage to the late Doris (Scovil) LaRock, the mother of his children ended in divorce.  He then moved to Michigan and married Darlene Moore which also ended in divorce.

Leon worked throughout the northeast and Canada as a union Plumber & Steamfitter for the Local 73 Plumbers and Steamfitter’s Union out of Oswego, NY.

Leon moved back to Ogdensburg in 2000 and became active with VFW (Veteran of Foreign Wars) Post 2936, American Legion Hanbidge Post No. 69, and Amvets Post 19, all of which he was a he was a lifetime member.   He spent time bartending for the legion in his later years.  Leon also helped organize community events and served as the treasurer for the American Legion. He enjoyed coaching youth sports and was a softball pitcher for Pat & Jerry’s for many years.    

He enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling which included spending time with his family and friends. He spent countless hours on the sidelines of his many grandchildren’s sporting events. He also dabbled in fabrication work where he made a pig smoker that was used for many family reunions.  He loved going for slow rides on the back roads, and an occasional steak at the Texas Roadhouse.  Friday lunches were always at The Smoke House with many family members attending.

He is survived by his children, four sons, Leon M. (Katherine) LaRock, Ogdensburg; Raymond (Kelly) LaRock, Lisbon; David (Brandi)LaRock, Ogdensburg; Darren (Cassandra) LaRock, Lisbon.  Six daughters, Rebecca (Christopher) Claxton, Ogdensburg; Pamela (James) Lalonde, Madrid; Karen (Mark) Watson, Cleveland, NY; Lisa (Frederick) Hanns, Potsdam; Marybeth LaRock, Ogdensburg; Dawn (Richard) Lockwood, Ogdensburg. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Almeda LaRock, Waddington; and sisters,  Irene (Tuddy) & Oakley Holland, Massena; Pauline (Ford) Wing, Ogdensburg; and Barbara Goult, Ogdensburg, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews

He is predeceased by his siblings, Katherine Harper, Dorothy Brander, Junior LaRock, Florence Bogart, Rachel Beldock, Beverly Wells, Wesley LaRock, and Paul LaRock.
