Gary T. Skelly

October 17, 1937 — April 4, 2016

A Mass of Christian Burial for Gary T. Skelly, 78, of Ogdensburg will be held on Monday April 11, 2016 at 10 A.M. at Notre Dame Church in Ogdensburg with Rev. F. James Shurtleff as celebrant.  A visitation will be held on Sunday April 10, 2016 at the LaRue & Pitcher Funeral Home, 324 New York Avenue, Ogdensburg from 4-7 P.M.  Burial will be held at a later date with full military honors.

Mr. Skelly died on April 4, 2016 at the RiverLedge Nursing Home in Ogdensburg, following a long illness.

Arrangements are under the direction of LaRue & Pitcher Funeral Home.

Gary Thomas Skelly was born on October 17, 1937 in Brockville, Ontario.  He was the only son of Thomas and Velma (Baker) Skelly.  He was a 1955 graduate of St. Mary’s Academy.  He enlisted in the United States Navy from 1957-1961 and served on the U.S.S. Wrangell and was stationed in Naples, Italy. After that he served as a Naval Recruiter in Ogdensburg for five years.  On November 23,1961 he married Nancy A. Mooney at Notre Dame Church.   

Gary was a Pipefitter and a Welder for the United Association of Plumbers and Steam Fitters Local 73, with 59 years in the Union. 

 Gary’s passion in life was softball, he helped build three softball fields in the City of Ogdensburg and he enjoyed playing in leagues and tournaments on both sides of border.  He extended his love of the game into coaching.  He coached girls Fast Pitch softball, his students over the years are too numerous to count. 

Gary is survived by his wife Nancy Skelly, his sons; Lance Skelly and his wife Hillary of Ogdensburg, Lee Skelly of Ogdensburg and Lynn Skelly and his wife Terese of Haddonfield, NJ.  He is survived by nine grandchildren; Zachary Skelly of Wake Forest, NC, Kiel, Kira, Karly and Kayden Skelly of Ogdensburg and Tess, Connor, Declan and Katharine Skelly of Haddonfield, NJ.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law Allan Mooney of Ogdensburg as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Donations in Gary’s memory may be made to the Notre Dame Heritage Fund.
