OGDENSBURG-A Memorial Service for Carol H. Smithers, 91, of Ogdensburg will be held on Friday, January 11, 2019, at 2:30 p.m. at the LaRue & Pitcher Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Nichols officiating. There will be no public calling hours. Burial will be held in the spring at Pine Hill Cemetery, Eel Weir.
Mrs. Smithers died on Sunday, January 6, 2019, at the Riverledge Nursing Home.
Arrangements are under the direction of LaRue & Pitcher Funeral Home.
Carol H. Smithers was born on April 22, 1927, in Depeyster, NY. She was the daughter of the late Roy and Enid (Wood) Howie. She was the valedictorian of the Heuvelton Central School class of 1944. She attended CCBI Business School in Syracuse and on April 5th, 1947 she married Donald R. Smithers in Winthrop, NY. Donald was a well-known Buick Car Dealer in Canton and operated a Wrecker Service in Ogdensburg and Canton areas. Mr. Smithers passed away on May 6, 2003. Carol worked as a secretary at St. Lawrence University from October 1, 1945, until April 30th, 1989, retiring after 42 years. She enjoyed watching St. Lawrence Universtiy Hockey and New York Yankee Baseball. She loved her pet dogs and cats. Carol and Donald enjoyed hosting many family and neighborhood gatherings over the years at their home on the Eel Weir Road.
She is survived by her children; Douglas Smithers of Warsaw, NY, David Smithers of Canton and Kimberly (Ronald) Johnson of Gouverneur. She is also survived by six grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Donald Smithers, her son, Randell Gene Smithers and infant daughter Donna Lee Smithers.
