Carol A. Bennett

Carol Ann Bennett, 76, passed away at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home on October 26, 2019, with her loving family by her side. She was born to the late Wesley and Agnes McGowan, March 8, 1943, in Brooklyn, NY. Carol graduated from  St. Saviors High School in 1961 and received her RN in Nursing from St Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1963. She worked at Southside Hospital and then at both the Sayville and West Islip Pediatric Offices until her retirement. She was married to Michael Joseph Bennett on June 26, 1965.

They lived in Sayville, NY for 32 years before becoming “Snowbirds” and splitting their time between Waddington, NY and Barefoot Bay, Fl.

Carol and Mike were wanderers by nature, often taking family trips down the “blue highways” of America when the kids were young. As adults, the whole family traveled together frequently including many Caribbean sailing adventures. After retirement, Carol and Mike traversed Ireland and  Italy,  railroaded across Canada, barged down the Rhine River and visited many other places in the world.

Well known to her friends was her intense passion for animals which led her to her adopting many homeless dogs including Mickey, Annie and Gypsy (who were not well behaved, didn’t like people with hats, and sometimes tried to bite the family) but she loved them all and gave them a wonderful home to spend their final years. She was an avid gardener and always had beautiful flowers around her homes.

Carol had a stroke on July 1, 2017, and was unable to recover completely. We are grateful to all her friends and family who visited her, called dad, or sent notes of encouragement, love, and support. We are forever grateful to the St. Joseph’s Nursing Home staff who took care of her until her passing.

Carol is survived by her loving husband Mike and 3 children Kelly (Chris) Anderson of East Hampton, NY, Michael (Meggin) Bennett of Sayville, NY, and Meghan (Gordon) Fetterly of Waddington, NY. “Grandma Love Muffin” adored her 6 grandchildren (Jake, Reghan, Grace, Calum, Maggie, and Lilly). Carol is also survived by her brother Jack (Regina) McGowan who lives in Manlius, NY, her 2 brothers-in-law, Thomas (Mary) Bennett, Bryan (Theresa) Bennett, and 8 nieces and nephews and many many friends who considered her as close as family.

Services will be at Raynour and D’Andrea Funeral Home 245 Montauk Highway, West Sayville, NY 11796 on Friday, November 1, 2019 from 4-7 pm. Her interment will be at Old St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waddington at a date that is yet to be determined. If you are unable to make the services, please plant a flower in your garden in mom’s memory.

Local arrangements are under the direction of LaRue & Pitcher Funeral Home, Ogdensburg.

Online condolences may be made at www.LaRuePitcher.com.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to Waddington Rescue at PO Box 331, Waddington, NY 13694 or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at 532 Broadhollow Rd. Suite 118, Melville NY 11747.

I know it is very late but I just saw this. Please except my condolences. I knew Carol when I was very young. Her in-laws were my Godparents. I thought she was so beautiful with the best smile ever. She was as kind as she was beautiful. I know I was nothing in her life but she always made me feel welcomed. My heart goes out to Mike(Mickey)

Dear Mike and Family, it's been years since we have seen each other but those years have been filled with many memories of both of you. I loved Carol. She was as beautiful outside as she was inside. I am so very sorry for your loss but I am glad that I got to know you both! May God bless you and grant you all peace and contentment,
